Workshop Briefs
The Bahasa Show, Hands on learning with LOTE and Arts outcomes presented by John Long
In this workshop participants will be involved in producing a hands on short video in Bahasa Indonesia. Participants are encouraged to bring a sample of student project work from their classroom, preferably including illustrations, photos or other graphic content.
The workshop is an Arts & LOTE activity. It involves the LOTE activities of reading, writing and speaking in Bahasa Indonesia. It also involves Arts activities of skills, techniques and process. This workshop is directly applicable to the classroom and has proved a very successful activity at the upper primary and lower secondary levels.
An Introduction to Pencak Silat presented by Bob Russell Brown
Bob Russell-Brown, has been learning and teaching various martial arts since 1956. He operated his own martial arts academy, founded the UWA Ju Jutsu and Karate clubs, developed a unique self defence style for women and is currently the chief instructor of the Wanneroo and Districts Tai Chi Academy.
Pencak Silat, the 'native' fighting art of Indonesia, differs from arts such as Kung Fu, Karate and Tae Kwondo in that it avoids confrontation, in both the physical and mental aspects. Practitioners try to avoid fighting, but if forced to fight they aim to deflect the attackers' energy and subdue their opponents, rather than incapacitate them. The movements are fluid and are often practised in pairs rather than 'punching and kicking the air'.
Participants in the workshop will learn some basic movements and incorporate them into a set form, working in pairs. Bare feet and comfortable clothing, such as a track suit or shorts and T shirt, would be appropriate. Bahasa Indonesia will be used wherever practical.
Year 12 Assessments – some practical tips Presented by Wendy Young
This practical workshop is intended for teachers of Post Compulsory Indonesian. The workshop has two aims: one is to focus teachers on what the TEE consists of; the other is to use that knowledge to help teachers create assessment materials best suited to their own students. Participants will look at preparing assessments based on the TEE format, focusing particularly on Viewing, Reading and Responding. First they will discuss what makes a good assessment including text types, length, appropriate language levels, writing appropriate questions, allocating marks, setting out the paper, establishing marking criteria, acknowledging sources. Teachers will then work together to create some reading comprehension assessments which can be taken away and used in the classroom. There will be some discussion how other assessments (particularly Listening and Responding, and Participants will be introduced to various sources (both hard copy and electronic) which could be used to prepare assessment materials. Bring a floppy disk to save your work on!
"The Thinking LOTE Room" presented by Helen Mills
This workshop focuses on using strategies that cater for all learning styles, ages and abilities. The focus will be on adapting the techniques outlined by Eric Frangenheim in The
Thinking Classroom to a LOTE environment. These thinking strategies can be used to enable students to develop a greater understanding of how to use language structures in all of the LOTE strands.
Exploring progress maps and standards in LOTE Presented by Kate Reitzenstein and Moya McLauchlan
This workshop will begin with an introduction to the progress maps and their relation to Student Outcome Statements. Participants will then examine in more detail the first three levels of student achievement. The workshop will also discuss the new standards in LOTE and how these standards relate to student achievement.
Using angklung in the classroom Presented by Bob Smith
With Indonesian language and cultural studies a feature of many school programs, teaching students to play Indonesian instruments would seem an appropriate way of engaging with the culture. Many schools have these bamboo musical instruments sitting in storerooms and cupboards. Teachers wonder how to use them and whether they might enhance their programs. During this session teachers will learn new skills to share with their
fellow staff and students. At the same time they will investigate how Indonesian Music and Dance fit in to the Curriculum Framework. Participants will also share the essential knowledge and skills and work out strategies for teaching Australian students when the support of traditional experts is inaccessible (but always desirable!).
As a result of taking part in this session participants will demonstrate an understanding of Studies of Asia as a cross curriculum perspective, be able to teach several pieces of traditional Indonesian music using the Angklung, be able to use the Angklung to support learning outcomes across the curriculum and be able to support colleagues in the school or neighbouring schools to introduce Indonesian angklung music in the curriculum.
WebShots: Digital Photography for the Internet Presented by Paul Allen (WILTA Webmaster)
The WebShots workshop is an introduction to digital photography for use on the internet or as email attachments. This workshop is definitely not a technical session on digital photography, but more of a teachers’ guide to the practical use of a digital camera and how to prepare photos for a school internet project. Some basic knowledge of the internet is preferred and some knowledge of how photo software programs work would be good – BUT neither is essential!
Middle School to Post Comp – bridging the gap Presented by Karen Bailey
During this session the transition between middle school LOTE Indonesian and Post Compulsory TEE Indonesian will be explored through the discussion of standards, and ideas for allowing the needs of TEE bound students to be catered for within the middle school classroom thus ensuring continued progress towards an acceptable standard by the end of year 10.
As part of this session Karen will share recently created outcomes focused modules of work for Year 10 Indonesian.
Exploring a SAC Pack Penny Coutas

Grasping Grammar Presented by Muhammad Bundhowi
In his open and entertaining way, Muhammad Bundhowi will outline the important grammar features which he feels are necessary to include in Indonesian teaching/learning programs to assist language acquisition. Teachers of all phases of learning will benefit from Pak Bun’s years of experience teaching Indonesian as a second language. Participants will also have the opportunity to raise any grammar issues they wish clarified or discussed.
Cultural Understandings Presented by Muhammad Bundhowi
Muhammad Bundhowi will lead participants further into fully understanding the Sociocultural Understandings outcome from the Curriculum Framework. He will present issues and ideas to enhance participants’ knowledge of Indonesia which will prove useful in classroom Indonesian language programs at all phases of learning.

Ana will present a workshop focussing on a particular aspect of Indonesian culture and will demonstrate, using practical classroom strategies, ways to facilitate cultural understandings in the language classroom.
On line learning Jan Jansen and Karen Bailey
This session looks at a computing unit developed collaboratively by a LOTE and computing teacher from a local high school using LOTE and the computing program Dreamweaver. This ICT package is "Saya bisa Tawar- menawar" or Getting a Bargain". Participants will explore the development of the unit and the tasks within it and hopefully provide the motivation for teachers to collaborate on the development of more of these ICT packages.
Using Games and Songs in LOTE
This session explores a variety of games and songs for use in the Indonesian classroom. Games and songs presented will have application in several of the phases of learning.
Creating material for the classroom using basic publisher and word Presented by Helen Dempsey and Sandra Jackson
This workshop is designed for people who would like to learn how to use the tools in Publisher and Word to develop materials for use in the classroom. Participants are encouraged to bring along a project or an idea of a resource they would like to create. During the workshop, Helen and Sandra will explain how to use tools such as; inserting text boxes, tables and pictures (both clip art and your own images), making borders and backgrounds and watermarking. Helen and Sandra will also provide useful templates that you can take away and use and develop to your own needs.
