dvdsAs many WILTA members know, it is very difficult to get a hold of Indonesian viewing resources in Perth.  The Indonesian film industry is still in its infancy, having been restricted during the Suharto years, and although there is a wealth of materials available on the web, there are few ‘professional’ extended viewing texts available that do not infringe copyright. Unlike other languages which have good representation on the foreign language shelves of JBHiFi and in the television guide of SBS, Indonesian films are particularly difficult to find.

We are fortunate that, from Perth, it is entirely feasible to arrange a quick, cheap trip to Indonesia to purchase learning and teaching resources – in this case, viewing texts. It is actually more economical to fly to Bali to buy DVDs than to order from a retailer! However, finding Indonesian viewing resources, even in Indonesia, is not as easy as one would assume: Western films are far more popular and far more readily available. The situation will improve as the film industry matures, but for now, here are some tips if planning your own quick resource trip:

  • Jakarta is the place to find DVDs and other learning resources. However the flight times; time spent in traffic once you get there; and the cost of food and accommodation makes Bali a better option for a quick trip. www.piramaxonline.com is a good DVD store in Jakarta.
  • AirAsia, Virgin Blue, Strategic and Garuda fly up to 3x daily from Perth to Denpasar. The flights arriving in the evening are very popular so expect to spend a long time waiting in visa queues. Sale prices (one-way) hover around the $150 mark including baggage, and regular prices around $250 all-in on the budget carriers.
  • Although Kuta isn’t the nicest place to stay, it’s close to the airport and easy to get to the major resource shopping points. Penny and Danielle recommend Febri’s Hotel or the All Seasons for approx $45/night.
  • DiscTarra at Mal Galleria in Bali is a great first port of call for DVD resources. The staff are very knowledgeable and have worked with many teachers visiting Bali. Gramedia is also at the Mal, so put it on your list!
  • Two Stars DVD in Kuta Discovery Mall has a good selection of DVDs and you can email them in advance with a special order request. Give them at least a week to order the films for you. Email: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
